A gold exploration company called Crossroads Gold has taken over Exploration Licence (EL006164) that entitles them to explore for gold in the Steiglitz goldfields region.
The company is particularly interested in the historic goldfields that run along the boundary of the Southern Brisbane Ranges National Park, and within the Steiglitz Historic Park.
The company has announced:
"We are well positioned to execute our 2026 exploration program of extensive drilling of key targets at our Steiglitz Project."
These targets for drilling include along the public roads running inside the Brisbane Ranges National Park and Steiglitz Historic Park boundaries, on private land immediately adjoining the park boundaries, and within the historic Steiglitz township itself.
This community group has formed to raise awareness about the exploration and future mining activity that could eventuate.
We are deeply concerned about the potential for commercial mining in this unique area for a multitude of reasons, including impacts to the following:
- General amenity of the area, particularly the peace and quiet that has attracted the residents and visitors.
- Capacity and safety of local roads that are not designed to carry high volumes of heavy trucks
- Wild fauna including endangered Phascogales, threatened Powerful Owls, and highly stressed koala populations
- Rare and endangered orchids, wildflowers and indigenous plants
- Tourism and visitation by special interest groups (including bushwalkers, bird watchers, artists, photographers, environmental groups, fossickers, etc)
- Built heritage assets that are vulnerable to damage and destruction
- Water table levels and potential flow-on effects to local waterways

While the potential impacts are significant and far-reaching, the benefits for the local community are negligible.
